Why, hello! My name is Jamie Flathers, and I would be most pleased to call you my student. I have been teaching writing for the last five years at the University of Idaho, where I got my Master of Fine Arts degree in creative writing (specifically, fiction writing). I’ve taught beginning, intermediate, and advanced fiction courses, composition and rhetoric, business writing, technical writing, and personal essay writing. I’ve also tutored students who were learning English as a second language.
Some months ago, a dear friend encouraged me to offer writing classes outside the university, for members of the wider Moscow community, and I taught just such a course this past May. The enrollment was small but fierce, and now that I’ve got a taste for it, I should very much like to expand this idea and invite more people to join me in this writing journey. If you are such a journeyer—a person with a story to tell, regardless of your experience or skill level—then I encourage you to look around this website and see if what I have to offer might fit your needs. I provide more than just writing classes, as you will see: I can also help you edit and revise existing stories, polish up a resume or cover letter, or get an essay ready to turn in. If you have any questions at all, feel free to drop me a line. I look forward to working with you!
“I had Jamie as an instructor for intermediate fiction, advanced fiction and business writing at the University of Idaho. You will not find a more accepting or insightful teacher. She took my biggest writing weaknesses and turned them from chores into challenges. I now approach every piece of literature with a keen interest in the “thing” and the “other thing,” deepening my understanding of story and furthering my obsession with rhetoric in society as a whole. Jamie is an eager teacher and brilliant writer (and has killer taste in music). I am grateful for her mentorship and friendship!”
— Lyndsie Kiebert, UI undergrad 2014-2017
"If you have the good fortune to have Jamie as a writing teacher, you will find yourself among many other grateful students. I have had the pleasure of being in a writing group with Jamie. I do not consider myself a writer, and what I write is very personal and sometimes painful. Jamie takes all this into account and graces me with sensitive comments and encouragements. I feel like I’m a real-deal writer when I sit with Jamie and listen to her critiques. She is never condescending or pushy; instead, she helps me find the best way to share my story without losing my voice. If you are looking for a safe and encouraging place to begin your journey in writing I encourage you to spend some time with Jamie."
